Muskogee Community Hospital Spends Green to Be Green

The 25 physicians behind the $52 million Muskogee Community Hospital hope to deliver health care in a different way with its new facility. And that includes the design of the facility itself.

The hospital, which will open in the first quarter of 2009, will be one of the first in the United States to be certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by the U.S. Green Building Council. Though the option to build in an environmentally friendly way is often costlier, hospital officials believe it’s in the best interests of the entire community to spend a little green to be green.

“We want to take care of patients, take care of the community and take care of the world,” says Mark Roberts, president of Muskogee Community Hospital. “We’re thinking more long-term than short-term.”

The long-term thinking includes planning to expand beyond the initial 92,000 square feet, which will include 45 patient rooms, four operating rooms and three procedural rooms, plus an on-site administrative and training center.
